“12 Years A Slave” Rated R, 2 hours 14 minutes. A tense drama based on a true story of a free New Yorker kidnapped and sold into slavery in the 1800s. Starring Chiwetel Ejiofor in the starring role and co-starring Brad Pitt, Paul Giamatti, Paul Dano, Alfre Woodard, Michael Fassbender and Sarah Paulson.  Distributed by Fox Searchlight.

“Philomena” Rated PG-13, 1 hour 35 minutes. Starring Judi Dench. A 2009 BBC investigative book is brought to the screen. When she was very young, Philomena had a child out of wedlock and her Irish-Catholic family forced her to put him up for adoption and the baby was sent to the United States. Years later, after moving on with her life, she meets up with a BBC reporter and tells him her story. Still #1 at our cinema!  Distributed by The Weinstein Company.

“Nebraska” Rated R, 1 hour 55 minutes. One of my favorite Directors after Frank Capra is Alexander Payne who brought us “The Descendants” & “Sideways” and this time chose his home state to work in. Bruce Dern stars as an elderly man on the brink of dementia who receives a sweepstakes letter in the mail informing him that he won one million dollars. He then sets out, walking at first, to a neighboring state to collect his winnings. Will Forte (of “SNL” fame), June Squibb and Stacy Keach are his co-stars. Shot in black & white and after a few minutes you don’t even notice it anymore.  Distributed by Paramount Vantage.

We have the honor at our Malverne Cinema of being the only theatre selected on Long Island to participate in the new New York Film Critics Series. Trailers and posters are up and running at the cinema to fill you in or you can log onto for further information. They are requesting we gather email addresses with full names for a signup list. Tickets are $18 dollars each for this once a month series. January 21st will mark our first event with them with the new film “At Middleton” being screened. These films will all be shown only once and all will not have been shown to the public anywhere prior to this event. If you have cell phones, the simulcast does accept questions tweeted to them. We’ve seen this happen already when we saw “Nebraska” months ago. Please visit the website to learn more and we hope to see you there.

On Monday, January 6th and again on Wednesday, January 8th @ 7:30 pm there will be a screening of “The Triumph” sponsored by The Knights of Columbus. A young man struggles with his beliefs. On Sunday, January 5th @ 1pm is “Beauty And The Beast” – an enchanting live play for the whole family to enjoy brought to us by Plaza Theatrical Productions. With additional shows on Saturday, January 11th @ 11am and Sunday, January 12th back @ 1pm.
