“Philomena” Rated PG-13, 1 hour 35 minutes. Starring Judi Dench and Steve Coogan. A 2009 BBC investigative book is brought to the screen. When she was very young, Philomena had a child out of wedlock and her Irish-Catholic family forced her to put him up for adoption and the baby was sent to the United States. Years later, after moving on with her life, she meets up with a BBC reporter and tells him her story.  Distributed by the Weinstein Company.

“Nebraska” Rated R, 1 hour 55 minutes. One of my favorite Directors after Frank Capra is Alexander Payne who brought us “The Descendants” & “Sideways” and this time chose his home state to work in. Bruce Dern stars as an elderly man on the brink of dementia who receives a sweepstakes letter in the mail informing him that he won one million dollars. He then sets out, walking at first, to a neighboring state to collect his winnings. Will Forte (of “SNL” fame), June Squibb and Stacy Keach are his co-stars. Shot in black & white and after a few minutes you don’t even notice it anymore.  Distributed by Paramount Vantage.

We have the honor at our Malverne Cinema of being the only theatre selected on Long Island to participate in the new New York Film Critics Series. Trailers and posters are up and running at the Cinema to fill you in or you can log onto http://www.nyfilmcriticsseries.com/Locations.html for further information. Tickets are $18 dollars each for this once a month series. These films will all be shown only once and all will not have been shown to the public anywhere prior to this event. If you have cell phones, the simulcast does accept questions tweeted to them as long as it is a live simulcast.  However, this show is not live.  It will have been taped the evening prior.  Advance ticket sales will go on sale beginning the Friday before the next screening. Psychic Medium Robert Hansen will be back at our Malverne Cinema on Tuesday, April 22 & at our Bellmore Movies a little earlier on Thursday, April 10th. Doors open @ 7pm and his readings begin @ 7:30. Tickets now on sale at our box offices. Admission is $30 per person. Tissues not included.
As far as The Oscars this past Sunday, we feel it was one of the best broadcasts in a long time. All the recipients were eloquent and appreciative and Ellen was just a joy to watch.
 We’re proud to note that our Cinemas have had or still have several of the nominated and award winning films!!
